Oleation or snehana in Sanskrit literally means loving your own body & is the essence of Ayurvedic self-massage or abhyanga when specifically applied to the joints, limbs & marma points of the body. Revered by Ayurveda and applied from birth through to old age, abhyanga administered with warm oil performs an essential role – boosting the body’s immunity, through increasing circulation, promoting proper drainage of the lymph system, removing toxins (ama) & stimulating the body’s production of serotonin (a happy hormone). The net result is a practice of self-love that protects, nourishes & strengthens the body, & the bi product is naturally younger, smoother, clearer, soft skin.
To Use: traditional method – apply oil warmed, in the morning or before sleep, liberally. Use circular motions around the joints & firm sweeping motions along the limbs. Bathing after the ritual is recommended, to relax the body & enable deeper penetration of the oils (not to wash the oil away). As a daily moisturiser – apply a small amount to warm wet skin (water will carry the oil into skin).
